As a fresh high school graduate, Jamie Ong was faced with a limited choice of career paths, either as an office clerk or promoter. With dreams of becoming a professional stage performer, Jamie pursued a degree in performing arts, but upon graduation, found herself at a crossroads.
"I realized there was no job out there for me to become a professional stage performer," Jamie shared. "Being a singing teacher was the only option."
The idea of being a singing teacher at the time felt like an insult to Jamie. She had spent six years honing her skills in the performing arts, and now she was going to use those skills to help other people become successful performers.
"I felt like all the training and experiences I had learned in the past six years were going to waste," Jamie revealed.
But little did she know that her journey was just beginning.

Jamie had various working experiences during school holidays and as a part-timer while studying. She worked for an insurance company, was an art teacher assistant turned art teacher, a clerk for a stationary company, a background actor, a salesperson, and an assistant to a realtor. After graduation, Jamie started managing her own music business, Jamie Ong Music.
Despite her diverse work experience, Jamie faced one common obstacle from employers – "You're still a freshman, you should get more experience." She realized she needed to work on her skills in handling issues and objections.
Then the pandemic hit, and Jamie was forced to pivot her business online. With free resources available on the internet, Jamie began creating video content and created her first vocal coaching course, which led to her first client, second client, and third client. The following year, she scaled her business with online courses.
Through her entrepreneurial journey, Jamie learned the value of fixing her mindset, delving into life coaching, CBT, and hypnotherapy. She also learned that there is no shortcut to success in business, and it requires patience and a willingness to make adjustments for positive results.
"Budgeting can sometimes be challenging, and we can be obsessed with immediate results," Jamie shared. "But learning what works and what doesn't work in your business and making adjustments is key."

As Jamie continues to refine her accuracy in both music and business, she sees managing her business as akin to conducting music, where one gesture might bring out a different sound than expected - a lesson she learned when she thought she would get a client but ended up becoming a business partner instead. She also faces the challenge of not knowing what her challenge is, but finds resolution in seeking guidance from experts and doing case studies outside of her industry.
The most precious thing Jamie received from her entrepreneurial journey is the freedom to create art and coach. She describes herself as an "imaginator" with critical thinking skills, and being an entrepreneur allows her to produce something from her own thoughts.
"I like both worlds," Jamie said. "Business is a subject that is measurable, while the art world is more focused on imagination, emotional expression, and the enjoyment of the senses."
Through her journey, Jamie has empowered herself to create a fulfilling career path that merges her passion for the arts and business. She encourages others to do the same by taking advantage of the resources available to them and having an open mindset.
"I always think that I am a work in progress," Jamie shared. "I am always learning, and I am always adapting."
